2002 was the lowest point in my life. I had given up my career in science to move around the world with my husband and look after the children.

The children were now in school and I felt completely worthless. My marriage was falling apart and I was over-weight and constantly tired. I was so depressed that all I did all day after dropping the children to school was lie in bed and think what it would be like to just end it all. Nobody would notice I was gone anyway.

I clearly remember the conversation that jolted me out of that state. Nothing dramatic, just asking the kids about their day at school. And then my sweet, innocent 9-year-old son asked me ‘How was your day Ma? What did you do?’ How do I answer that? What could I tell him I did today? I realised I had to do something; my kids needed me.

I realised I had to do something; my kids needed me.

That night I set some goals

I am going to go back to work

I am going to lose weight and get fit and healthy

I am going to remove all toxic people from my life and surround myself only with people who love and support me

Happy to say I achieved all my goals. Wasn’t easy to go back to a science research career after 12 years as a stay at home mum. But I was determined and focussed. I managed to get into a top, world renowned research lab, completed my PhD and continued my research in that lab as a post-doc.

Wasn’t easy to change eating habits and follow an exercise program after lying around in bed all day. But I learnt strategies to keep me on track and today I am fitter, healthier and have more energy than ever before in my life.

Wasn’t easy to leave my marriage of 22 years and learning do things on my own. I had to overcome tremendous fear and develop trust in myself. But I did it and today I have a life filled with love and peace. All my relationships right now are strong and happy.

And now, I have a new goal. The one that I am most excited about…
